Hello everyone, today I am going to talk about the novel Ladies Coupé, written by Anita Nair, she is an Indian English author.
Anita Nair is well known for her novels that talk about women’s lives, struggles, and identities. And this work Ladies Coupé, is published in 2001, is one of her most famous works. It has been translated into many languages and is read widely both in India as well as abroad.
The title of the novel itself is very meaningful. A “coupé” which means a small compartment in an Indian train, meant only for women. In this little space, six women come together, and each of them shares their own story.
The whole novel is built around this question.
👉 Can a woman live alone and still be happy? Or does she always need a man to complete her life?
So, in simple words, this novel is all about women’s search for identity, freedom, and happiness.
Okay let's get into the novel .. I'll be telling short summary of this...
Akhila is protagonist of this novel and she is forty-five years old. She works as an income tax clerk. After her father's death, the whole family looked Akhila. she had to take charge. She became the provider. Her family depended on her completely. escpecially, Her younger brother and sisters lived off her earnings.
Now, at this stage in life, Akhila feels empty. She has no husband, no children, no companion. She has always been “somebody’s daughter,” “somebody’s sister,” but never just Akhila.
BY the Way she goes to the railway station and buys a ticket to Kanyakumari without informing anyone. So she boards the train and enters the ladies coupé, ..
Akhila sits among them silently. She watches them and wonders: What are their stories? Have they lived better lives than mine? Do they have the answers I am looking for?
Akhila’s mind slips back into memories. She remembers her father’s death, She remembers stepping into the role of the head of the family, not because she wanted to, but because she had no choice.
She also remembers watching her friends get married, wear bangles and saris, hold babies in their arms, while she stood aside, always the provider, never the bride.
she finds five other passengers: namely
Janaki,
Margaret Shanti,
Prabha Devi,
Sheela,
Marikolanthu,
This the summary guys...Now let's look at character sketch ...of all characters in the novel......
🚆 Chapter 2: Janaki’s Story
Janaki Prabhakar, she is the first to share her story.
Janaki begins with her childhood. She grew up in a house where she was treated like a delicate doll. Her parents believed girls must be protected, pampered before getting married. But,Janaki never had to make decisions on her own. In the sense like, Her mother chose her clothes, like what sort of dress should wear. And decided when she could go out, and even told her what to eat. And what not to eat..
But, She never questioned it. In fact, she accepted it. She believed that this was how life should be for women.
But ,When Janaki came of age, her parents arranged her marriage with Prabhakar, Prabhakar is a bank officer. She didn’t know him well, but she trusted her parents’ choice. After marriage, Prabhakar took charge of everything. He made all the decisions, from big matters like finances and house purchases to small ones like what food should be cooked.
Then, She remembers one incident. Her husband had fallen ill once. For the first time in her life, Janaki had to step out, go to the bank, manage money, and deal with the world. She was terrified. She felt lost and helpless, like a child in a crowded street. That day, she realised how completely dependent she was.
She ends by saying, “A woman is always looked after. First by her father, then by her husband, then by her son. But who teaches her to look after herself?”
🚆 Chapter 3: Margaret Shanti’s Story
Margaret Shanti, she is actually a schoolteacher, I mean Margaret is a chemistry teacher in a girls’ school. She is well educated, confident. But when she talks about her life, again, her words carry pain.
She begins with her marriage. She married Ebenezer Paulraj, a man who, at first, seemed warm and ambitious.
But after marriage. Paulraj became controlling selfish. He did not like Margaret’s independence.
Moreover, Paulraj was obsessed with his appearance. He cared about how people saw him. He was proud of being tall, well-dressed, and of having a beautiful wife. He wanted Margaret to remain slim and attractive.
At first, Margaret accepted it. She dressed well, took care of herself. But soon, The turning point came when she had children. After her pregnancies, her body changed. She put on weight , ...of course every women put on weight after their pregnancy. Paulraj no longer showed love. Instead, he mocked her appearance. Like your so fat...
But Margaret is not a woman who surrenders easily. She decided to take silent revenge. She began to cook food that would make Paulraj gain weight. She fed him rich meals, oily snacks, and heavy sweets. Slowly, his slim body turned fat, his good looks disappeared, and he became clumsy.
She realised her whole marriage had become a battlefield. She was no longer a wife or a partner, but an enemy to her own husband.
🚆 Chapter 4: Prabha Devi’s Story
Prabha Devi was born into comfort. Her father was wealthy, and she grew up in a house where nothing was lacking.she was married to Jagdeesh, a rich businessman. At first, Prabha had a husband who provided everything, a house filled with luxury, and not a single worry about money.
But slowly, Her life had become a golden cage. She had everything — jewellery, clothes, servants, comfort — but she did not have freedom.
And Prabha had always admired the idea of swimming. One time, She went to a women’s club that had a pool. Nervously, she wore a swimming costume. The moment she entered the water, she felt something she had never felt before. Each time she swam, she discovered a new kind of joy.
Soon, swimming became her secret. She started going regularly, without informing her husband, because she knew he would not approve.
One day, Jagdeesh discovered her secret. He was shocked, even angry. For him, it was shameful that his wife was “displaying” herself in a swimming costume. He did not see the joy it gave her. He saw only “what will people say.”
By the way, Prabha begged him to understand, but he did not. Slowly, she gave up swimming. She chose to obey,
And so, she returned to her golden cage. Her jewels once again felt like chains.
🚆 Chapter 5: Sheela’s Story
She is the youngest among the women in the coupé — only fourteern. The memory that she shares is about her grandmother..
She was the one who decided what was right and wrong.
But what shook Sheela was the way others in the family treated the old woman. Instead of respecting her, they began to ignore her. They spoke about her in front of her, as if she could not hear. They treated her like a burden.
For Sheela, this was heartbreaking. She could not understand how love could disappear so quickly..
It's about when people get old ... people... When women lose their beauty...then don't respect.
🚆 Chapter 6: Marikolanthu’s Story
Her life is darker, filled with wounds that never truly heal.
Marikolanthu grew up in a family that worked for the rich Chettiar household. Her mother was a servant there, her father a gardener. She was raped by Murugesan, a man from the Chettiarfamily. Marikolanthu remembers the silence of her mother after it happened. No one spoke of it openly, no one voiced against Chettiar family... because they were working there.
The worst part came later — she gave birth to a child. A boy, born from that violation. Every time she looked at his face, she saw Murugesan, the man who had destroyed her childhood. So whenever ,baby’s cries reminded her of pain, not of motherhood.
For a long time, she struggled with guilt. She thought: Was it my fault? Did I deserve this? But over the years, She realized that the world had already punished her unfairly — then, why should she punish herself again? She decided she would never let anyone control her life again.
So, She worked hard, raised her child in her own way.
after listening to these women, Akhila feels something stirring in her. If Margaret could fight against her husband’s dominance, if Prabha Devi could rediscover her independence, if Marikolanthu could survive after being crushed — then why can’t I ....
With this it ends, ...
